KEYNOTE: Official RDA and You: What to Expect after the Countdown Clock Ends

Are you feeling bewildered by the new version of RDA, so-called "Official RDA"? Worried about the "countdown clock" with its warning that "Original RDA" will be unavailable after May 11, 2027? We've all gotten used to the structure and content of RDA over the last decade—and now the new version looks almost unrecognizable! Robert L. Maxwell, chair-elect of the RDA Steering Committee, will talk about this, and help you learn to find what you're looking for and interpret what you find. The presentation will include some simple problems covering common cataloging tasks to lead you through the process of using the new Official RDA Toolkit, and help build confidence that "yes, I can do this!"
Biography:
Robert L. Maxwell is a senior librarian at the Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, where he has chaired the Special Collections and Formats Catalog Department and catalogs special collections and classics materials. He won the 2002 ALA Highsmith Library Literature award for the book Maxwell's Guide to Authority Work (2002) and is the author of a number of other books on cataloging published by ALA, including Maxwell's Handbook for RDA (2013), winner of the 2014 ABC-CLIO Library Publishing Award and the 2015 Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Outstanding Publication Award. He has taught cataloging at Brigham Young University and the University of Arizona School of Information Resources and Library Science and has chaired the Bibliographic Standards Committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). He has been a voting member of ALA's Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA), the body responsible for developing official ALA positions on revisions to RDA, and the liaison to CC:DA from the ALA Subject Analysis Committee to CC:DA. He has co-chaired the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's Standing Committee on Training, and has been a member of the PCC Standing Committee on Standards. He is currently chair-elect of The RDA Standing Committee, the international body that governs RDA, the international cataloging rules. In addition to an MLS from the University of Arizona, he holds a JD from Brigham Young University and a PhD in classical languages and literatures from the University of Toronto.
Exploring the MLA Application Profile for Music Materials

Description:
The MLA application profile for RDA covers notated and recorded music in both physical and electronic formats. This session will provide an overview of the structure and terminology of the application profile and explore the ways it can be used in conjunction with other documentation, including the MLA Best Practices for Cataloging Music Materials and LC-PCC Policy Statements and Metadata Guidance Documents. We will then walk through practical examples of using the application profile and associated documentation to create a basic record and discuss catalogers' judgment areas where the record could be further fleshed out.
Biography:
Keith Knop is the head of the music cataloging section of the University of Georgia Libraries and is currently chair of the Music Library Association's Cataloging and Metadata Committee and the Music OCLC Users Group. Prior to coming to UGA he was associate music cataloger at Florida State University's Warren D. Allen Music Library for ten years. In addition to the MLIS, he holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Florida State.
