NOTSL Scholarships

Occasionally, a recipient of the NOTSL Scholarship submits a proposal that particularly speaks to the profession of cataloging. When this happens, the Scholarship Committee designates their award as a "Jane Myers Cataloging and Metadata Scholarship" in recognition of our former colleague.

Margaret Maurer shared the following information via email with the AUTOCAT community in April of 2007, following the death of Jane Myers:

Those in the Public Library cataloging community in Ohio have been grieving the loss of Jane Myers, our friend and a catalog librarian at Westlake Porter Public Library. She made many contributions to the Ohio Library Council's Technical Services Division, to NOTSL, to TechKNOW, and Westlake Porter Public Library.

My favorite story about Jane involves her struggle with cancer of an unknown origin. When Jane was originally diagnosed with this disease three years ago, she also discovered that there was no LCSH heading for her type of cancer. She at once initiated the process for the creation of a heading to describe her cancer, although she was not a PCC participant. I'd call that a pretty proactive response to a tough situation.

The Margaret Maurer Professional Networking Award is established to honor the persistent contributions of Margaret Maurer, Associate Professor Emeritus at Kent State University, who dedicated over three decades of service to NOTSL. Margaret's commitment to the organization, including her instrumental role in developing the position of Archivist, reflects her lifelong dedication to advancing the library profession and supporting colleagues in their growth.

Reasoning: By providing this support, the award not only honors Margaret Maurer's legacy but also fosters the ongoing growth of library professionals who contribute meaningfully to their institutions and communities. The Margaret Maurer Professional Networking Award recognizes the value of lifelong learning, professional engagement, and leadership within the library profession, helping recipients to expand their expertise, network with peers, and bring innovative practices back to their workplaces. It embodies the spirit of service, dedication, and professional excellence that Margaret exemplified throughout her career. 

Eligibility: This award is designed to support working library professionals and paraprofessionals in pursuing face-to-face professional development opportunities that enhance their skills, knowledge, and impact within the field. This award is available exclusively for NOTSL members and may be used to cover both conference registration fees and travel expenses, with a maximum of $1,000. 

Recipients may use the award to attend conferences, workshops, trainings, or other professional development activities directly related to library services, management, technology, or information science. Preference is given to experiences that foster personal connections and networking, reflecting Margaret's love for face-to-face conversations and her belief in the power of building professional relationships.
